Legal Internships

About Us 

African Services Committee (ASC) was founded in 1981 by Ethiopian refugees. Over the past 24 years, ASC has grown to become a multi-service agency dedicated to improving the well-being and self-sufficiency of NYC's immigrant communities. We provide direct health, housing, social and legal services to over 10,000 clients each year with particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and support. 

Law School Intern/ Pro Bono Opportunity: Summer 2022

Commitment: 10-12 weeks, up to 40 hours per week

Responsibilities: 

• Manage requests for legal assistance 
• Return client calls
• Screen potential clients for immigration eligibility 
• Assist staff with translations and legal research  and drafting
• Draft immigration forms, briefs, declarations, gather supporting evidence, conduct research under supervision of ASC legal advocates

Qualifications: 

• Currently enrolled in law school 
• Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable immigrant populations
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment
• Strong organizational and communication skills with high attention to detail
• Fluent or highly conversational in French or Spanish strongly preferred (must be able to converse expertly with native speakers about a variety of sensitive and detailed topics) 

Learning Objectives: 

• Intern will learn about the African Services Committee as well as various social services available to immigrant populations in New York. 
• Intern will deepen understanding of immigration law, policy, and practice in the United States. 
• Intern will develop problem solving skills, client service skills, and intercultural social work skills.
• Intern will learn how to manage client affairs within established deadlines, to provide the best service possible. 

Comprehensive training will be provided. Intern will be supervised by an experienced attorney.

This is an unpaid internship position. However, students may pursue outside funding opportunities and arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit.

Undergraduate Internship Opportunity: Summer 2022

Commitment: 10-12 weeks, up to 40 hours per week

• Other administrative tasks as assigned 

Qualifications: 

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a bachelor’s or master’s program in International Relations, Social Sciences, or related Global fields
• Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable immigrant populations
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment
• Strong organizational and communication skills with high attention to detail
• Fluent or highly conversational in French or Spanish strongly preferred (must be able to converse expertly with native speakers about a variety of sensitive and detailed topics)
