What are your services?

African Services provides a range of health and social services for immigrants making a new start in New York City. Our food pantry, ESL classes, hospital escort, legal assistance, testing center and HIV care and support services are a resource for anyone in need.

Can you provide interpretation? What languages does your staff speak?

Yes, we provide medical interpretation through our hospital escort and HIV care and support programs. African Services is also contracted to provide interpretation services at hospitals and clinics throughout he city. Languages spoken on staff include French, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Amharic, Abbey, Attie, Bambara, Baoule, Balengou, Bemba, Dioula, Dogon, Douala, Fulani, Kiswahili, Luvale, Luganda, Mandingo, Malenke, Medumba, Moghamo, Nyanja, Pulaar, Rukiga, Ruoro, Runyankore, Senoufo, Serere, Soninke, Tiggriggna, Tonga, and Wolof.

Do you have English classes?

Yes, we offer evening English as a Second Language classes and literacy instruction at basic ESL levels.

Do you have services for families and children?

African Services has an HIV Case Management Program that provides supportive services for families with an HIV diagnosis.

In some cases, we may be able to provide general counseling and mediation to other families in need.

Do you provide HIV testing?

Yes, we have an on-site testing center and offer free and confidential testing for HIV, STDs, TB, Hepatitis B & C, pregnancy and more.

Do you provide other health services?

Yes, our testing center also offers free testing for TB, Hepatitis B and C, pregnancy, blood pressure and diabetes.

Do I need to have medical insurance to be served?

No, all our services are provided free of charge to anyone in need. We also help clients without insurance to access additional free or low-cost care at hospitals throughout the city.

Where do you send clients for health care and services?

Clients are referred to our linked partners at hospitals and clinics throughout New York City.

How much do services cost?

Our services are free. In some cases, there may be charges for legal filing fees.

Do you have to be African to receive services?

No, our services are open to all individuals regardless of ethnicity, national origin, immigration status, race, religion, gender, age, or sexual orientation.

What are your hours of operation?

African Services is open Monday - Friday, from 9am - 5pm. Our testing center is open Monday to Thursday, 9 to 4:30pm and service is on a walk-in basis. We are located at:

Event Space

African Services rents its two floors of renovated loft space for small events, meetings, retreats, and photo shoots.

Space includes a full kitchen and dining area, conference space, break-out meeting areas, and mini-computer lab with Internet access.

We are located at 429 West 127th Street, between Convent and Amsterdam Aves., two blocks from the A, B, C, D & 1 trains.

Founded in 1981 by Ethiopian refugees to give a helping hand to other newcomers, today African Services is a multiservice agency based in Harlem and dedicated to assisting immigrants, refugees and asylees from across the African Diaspora.

Our programs address the needs of newcomers affected by war, persecution, poverty, and global health inequalities. We provide health, housing, legal, educational, and social services to 10,000 people each year. Staff representing more than 20 countries and speaking over 25 languages provide culturally and linguistically relevant support to this diverse and growing community.

Expanding HIV prevention and access to AIDS treatment and care is central to our mission. African Services has taken this work from Harlem to the frontlines of the global pandemic and now operates four HIV clinics in Ethiopia.

We are committed to challenging stigma and discrimination at all levels and supporting individuals, families and communities most impacted by AIDS. Combined with life-saving treatment, this care and support has transformed thousands of lives.
